Barbara Hargreaves Swinton

The Swinton knitting Banksy has been adding her creations to postboxes and other random places across Swinton

This week a new addition of some knitted chicks have been spotted on a Swinton postbox.

Dubbed as the ‘Banksy’ of Swinton, Barbara Hargreaves has been crafting many intricate creations for years, placing different decorations on postboxes and fences in unsuspecting areas of Swinton.

With every season and some national holidays as well as awareness weeks Barbara has knitted special creations. One particular craft was for ‘Baby loss awareness week’ in October of last year.

Barbara created teddy bears and hearts to sit on a fence, which marked the occasion perfectly; offering comfort to those who saw the little knitted pieces of joy.

Barbara has also made some creations for events such as Halloween and Christmas.

However, sometimes her hard efforts to bring some more joy into Swinton are haltered after these creations go missing.

In June of last year Barbara addressed one of the missing postbox toppers on Facebook by stating:

“My dinosaur postbox topper on Swinton Precinct has gone. This was to make people smile.”

90 people commented on this post to share their anger toward the postbox topper being missing, really showing how her work brings the community together.

One comment stated: “We always look forward to your new creations, they certainly make us smile and appreciate your talents, sorry some scroat has stolen it xx”

Even though there are challenges to Barbara’s work, she still continues to brighten the area with her knitting needles!

The new addition of the Easter chicks is a bright reminder of the continuous community spirit in Swinton and a great show of talent from Barbara.
