To mark International Women’s Day (March 8), Salford Lads and Girls Club has partnered up with Salford Quays-based 11 Central for a special celebration.
For the month of March, a piece of ‘Salford Lass’ tufted artwork created by the local textile artist Alena Donely will be hung up in 11 Central in Central Bay, MediaCityUK.
The vibrant sign – previously on display at the club itself and The Manchester Contemporary –was commissioned by the club to mark Shelagh Delaney Day, which takes place each year on November 25.
In addition, 11 Central will also be offering three new female-inspired cocktails. A portion of the proceeds from each cocktail will be donated to support girls’ activities at the club.
Each of the cocktails is named after an inspirational woman from the drink’s origin. The women include, Cuban female rights activist Ana Betancourt, Afro-Brazilian warrior Dandara dos Palmares and famous American feminist, Rosa Parks.
Hayley Robinson, from 11 Central, said: “We’re thrilled to partner with a brilliant local artist and to support the invaluable work being done at Salford Lads and Girls Club.
“International Women’s Day is all about celebrating the achievements of women everywhere and to uplift the next generation. Through this collaboration, we hope to honour local women’s creativity, just like Shelagh Delaney, and contribute to the future empowerment of young girls in our community.”
Salford Lads and Girls Club has been a cornerstone of the Salford community since 1903. The club often welcomes music fans from around the world thanks to Stephen Wright’s iconic image of The Smiths taken outside the club in 1985.
