A Salford pensioner whose mother survived domestic violence is appealing for help in holding a fundraising event in her memory.
Edwin Green, 72, of Langworthy, is no stranger to fundraising having collected £105,000 for St Ann’s Hospice in memory of his late wife, Carol.
He is now aiming to raise money for the domestic violence charity Salford Survivors to honour his mum, Vera Green, who died at the age of 99 last year.
He is appealing for donations from the local community, asking for prizes to contribute to the raffle and tombola. Prizes such as toiletries, bottles of alcohol, vouchers, food, and hampers are appreciated.
Edwin said: “Donations help us achieve the best financial benefits for the Salford Survivors, as it means more money can be generated back into the charity rather than spent on the costs of the event.”
He has also asked for anybody who would be willing to offer any entertainment for the event, such as a solo musician, band, DJ, comedian, or anybody who can provide amusement to the occasion.
Vera raised £6,100 at the age of 97 for Salford Survivors, walking laps of her residence’s corridor for each year of her life, plus three more in tribute of Captain Sir Tom Moore.
In recognition of this amazing achievement and charitable contribution, she was awarded the Mayor’s Citizen Award in 2022, alongside becoming the patron of Salford Survivors Project.
Following his mother’s charitable example, Edwin said: “If I know I can help people, I will help people”, and he is keen to make “as much money for charity as possible.”
He commented that his “aim is to raise upwards of £1000”, and is optimistic this can happen, helping a cause close to his heart.
The fundraiser will take place on May 23 at the Pendleton X Services club, Langworthy. There are 200 tickets available to buy, costing £4 each.
For anybody who is able to donate, or for any enquiries, Edwin asks to be contacted via his email eddieg2002@hotmail.com, or by telephone 07979 374 937.
