A man from Little Hulton has walked 10 kilometres to raise money for Manchester Children’s Hospital after his niece was diagnosed with cancer.
Liam Lang covered 400 lengths of a pool fully clothed to raise more than £1,200 to buy televisions for Ward 86, which cares for children with cancer and leukaemia.
His seven-year-old niece Eliza has been a part of the Ward 86 family since 2023. Seeing the care she’s received, Liam felt he had to give something back.
He said:”It makes me feel brilliant, overwhelmed, emotional. This ward is very close to my heart I wanted to do it to give something back to the nurses and the Ward – they are amazing.
“They go above and beyond for all the families.
“Even though it’s horrible to see what everyone is going through on the ward it’s nice to see that there are such good people out there”.
When asked why he chose Ward 86 Liam said: “It’s full of love and its full of care. Even the parents get the love and the support the children get”
“From the cleaners, to the lady who takes your order for dinner, up to the ward manager – they are all amazing.”
Liam revealed the thinking behind his unusual challenge, which started and finished yesterday at the leisure centre in Walkden.
“I can’t swim! It started off pretty easy because you get into that motion but after 170 lengths I started feeling it.
“My uncle was walking up and down with me egging me on. I had my Mum there with pictures of Eliza and I just kept thinking to myself ‘if Eliza can fight this a bit of leg pain isn’t that bad.'”
Joanne Kiggin, Liam’s cousin, was there to support him “I was really really proud of him. It was something that he’s absolutely bleeding smashed on his own.
“I wanted to get in with him I wanted to help him I tried to push him telling him to keep concentrated and keep focused I could see he was struggling.
“Seeing people donate is amazing. It is amazing when the community comes together Little Hulton does get bad press.
“Nobody shows the goodness of the of the people sometimes, they don’t see what we can do when we all come together.”
Liam’s uncle Anthony helped Liam when he hit that barrier “When he got ten reps left to do I just decided I would walk with him and keep him going.
“When I knew he was on his last one I waited till he got to the other end of the pool from where everyone was to give him a hug just to push him on”.
“I knew he wouldn’t have stopped. There was no way on God’s earth he would have stopped.
“100% I could guarantee he wasn’t going to give up.”
