Roadworks to support the cycle and pedestrian movements on Irwell Street will start this March.

From March 4 to the end of April there will be no access to Irwell Street from Trinity Way and no access to City Centre. To redirect traffic, a signed diversion route will be in place via Chapel Street, Bridge Street and Deansgate.

Motorists wishing to turn right onto Irwell Street from Stanley Street will also be rerouted.

Salford-bound traffic although will remain unaffected.

During the works for the improvement scheme, commuters can expect delays on surrounding routes, particularly Chapel Street, Bridge Street and Liverpool Road, due to diverting traffic.

The improvement scheme aims to provide a “more connected, accessible, and green urban environment for residents.”

The scheme will do so through the:

  • Implementation of cycle lanes in both directions on Irwell Street with a new connection to existing facilities on Trinity Way.
  • Installation of protected facilities where feasible to enhance safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Upgraded paving and carriageway surfacing.
  • Introduction of tactile paving at pedestrian crossings for improved accessibility.
  • New landscaping and planting to increase greenery and support sustainable drainage.
  • Addition of a yellow box junction at the intersection of Irwell Street and Stanley Street to bolster cycle access along Irwell River Park and ease local passage.

There will be two nights of temporary closures from 9.00pm to 6.00am from late April to early May.

Councillor Mike McCusker, Lead Member for Planning, Transport and Sustainable Development, said“We are excited to announce this transformative project that will significantly enhance cycling and pedestrian access in the area.

“While we acknowledge there may be some temporary disruption during the construction phases, the long-term benefits will far outweigh any inconvenience.

“We appreciate the patience and cooperation of our residents as we work towards creating a more sustainable and accessible urban environment for all.”

The full completion of this transformative project is slated for May 2024.
