Amid the cost of living crisis, the usage of Salford’s foodbanks has increased significantly through these difficult times, with over 150 local agencies referring people to these charities.
Last year in Salford alone, 20,690 people were helped with food parcels – an alarming 35 per cent of these were given to children.
Food banks leading drive is to help combat the frontline of hunger and poverty across the UK, however many struggle to meet the rising demand due to the hindering level of donations.
This is something food banks across Salford are increasingly worried about, as the demand is increasing, yet donations are limited.
Mervyn, a volunteer at Salford food bank said: “The people of Salford are not using food banks for the sake of it. They are using food banks because they need them.”
Despite this upsetting reality, he proceeded to state that there is ‘a level of satisfaction’ within his job, as he knows that both him and his team have played a vital role in allowing families to go home with some food.
He gave his thanks for the community saying: “The people of Salford are extremely generous with their donations.”
The community’s donations alongside other schemes such as food clubs, and apps such as ‘Too Good To Go’ have been introduced to help maintain long term solutions to tackle this crisis and reduce the struggle.
Benefits and tax credits for those who are from low income households have been introduced to help combat the ongoing cost of living, helping those who are eligible claim up to £900. Salford food banks have noticed ‘a slight decrease in the demand for the use of food banks over this period’, however, with the third and final payment being distributed this February, this could be soon to change.
17,000 struggling individuals and families across the United Kingdom have proceeded to sign an online petition to continue these bursary payments beyond February, as further support is thought to be needed throughout the year to support those who need it.
