Irlam FC, who were due to play their fourth round FA Vase tie this month, have been kicked out of the competition.
The club had planned to travel to the North East to play Blyth Town in the fourth round proper of this season’s FA Vase but the plans came to an unexpected end.
Irlam were dumped out of the competition after it was ruled that they had fielded an ineligible player.
In a run spanning back to the start of the season, John Main’s team had overcome four non-league sides and would have been relishing the opportunity to play lower-ranked opposition, fancying their chances of moving yet another step closer to Wembley.
However, Irlam’s FA Vase adventure came to an end off the pitch, without the side kicking a ball.
Last December, the Salford-based Non-league team beat the competition’s 1981 winners Whickham FC, But an FA enquiry after the game found that the club had used an ineligible player.
The FA highlighted that Irlam were quick to own up to the mistake, saying: “The club admitted the charge, therefore it was found proven that players had played in the match (despite) not been correctly registered.”
The club’s impressive performances throughout the competition should still give the side confidence to kick on in the North West Counties Premier Division.
Irlam will hope to make use of games in hand over their rivals in the league table as the side look to improve on their 18th-place position.
