Irlam FC overcame 1981 FA Vase winners Whickham AFC winning 1-0 in the North-East to progress into the fourth round proper of this season’s competition.
Nicholas Taylor’s first-half strike proved decisive as the Salford-based side ensured that their impressive FA Vase run would extend into the New Year.
For the third consecutive round, John Main’s men have been drawn away to a team in the North-East. Irlam will have to successfully negotiate a tricky tie against Blyth Town if they are to progress into the last sixteen of the competition.
Blyth Town secured their fourth round place in dramatic fashion beating higher league opponents Bishop Auckland 3-1 on penalties last weekend.
With their victory, Blyth reached the fourth round of the FA Vase for the first time in the club’s relatively short history. Founded in 1995 ‘The Braves’ have enjoyed a successful start to their league campaign and currently occupy 2nd position in the Northern League Division Two.
The Northumberland outfit represents the fifth team Irlam has drawn against in this year’s cup run.
In beating Whickham, Irlam moved yet another step closer to a Wembley final in May. A trip to the capital could be on the horizon for the North West Counties Premier League team if they can maintain their winning form in the FA Vase come 2024.
However for the moment, John Main must keep his side focused on the task at hand. If Irlam are to beat Blyth they will have to get the better of three more opponents if they are to book their place in this season’s final.
Irlam FC’s tie with Blyth Town will take place on the 13th of January as the FA Vase adventure continues for John Main’s side.
