Police rescue experts were out in Salford Quays today spreading the Don’t Drink and Drown warning as the Christmas office party season gets into full swing.
The regional Underwater Police Search and Marine Unit support vehicle was parked next to the Quays to promote the Royal Life Savers Society’s annual campaign in the lead-up to Christmas.
Officer, Gareth Olley, said the campaign runs to help to prevent accidental drownings particularly towards the festive period.
It also encourages people to make sure their friends and colleagues aren’t left alone or left to walk home on their own from a Christmas night out.
The campaign, running #BEAMATE across its social media platforms, uses the phrase ‘Nobody gets left behind’ helping people remember to look out for their friends after consuming alcohol.
The leaflets that were available at the site stated the dangers of alcohol and going near open water, including the negative effects of alcohol, which prevents people from being able to swim to safety.
Mr Olley said: “Hopefully the more people we speak to the more the message will get out.”
The leaflet reiterates: “If you’ve had a drink stay away from the water’” and that “alcohol seriously affects your ability to stay out of trouble.”
