English National Opera (ENO) has announced a working partnership with Greater Manchester to develop a new home for the opera company.

The partnership will allow English National Opera and Greater Manchester to work together on bringing world renowned culture to a base in the region by 2029.

The English National Opera has stated they are excited to have the chance to inspire and create work with and for new audiences across the borough.

The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said: “The ENO is one of the most exciting cultural institutions in the country, and we’re immensely proud to be able to bring them to a new home here in Greater Manchester.

“Greater Manchester’s world-renowned history of radical art, activism, and affecting change, and the cultural renaissance taking place across our towns and cities, makes it the ideal home for the ENO. We can’t wait to welcome them and see where this new partnership takes us.”

The announcement comes as part of a £24m was awarded to ENO to enable the organisation to develop an artistic programme in a new base outside of London during the 2024-26 period.

Speaking on the matter a spokesperson for English National Opera has said: “Based on our detailed analysis of audiences in Greater Manchester, as well as conversations with other artistic institutions, the English National Opera are confident that it will be a welcome addition to Greater Manchester’s cultural landscape, complimenting the brilliant artistic offering already available.

“The English National Opera will be working with local artists, communities and audiences to create work that will feel relevant and exciting to Greater Manchester.”

Andy Williams is a Professor of Creative Composition at The University of Salford who has composed Operas including the worlds first Northern Opera, The Arsonist a Northern Opera?

Williams went on to say: “They will have to spend a lot on developing audiences, because where there hasn’t been an audience for an art form it is quite hard to develop one.

“There are things that can be done, but they’ve got to be imaginative things, they can’t just assume that people will turn up, they’ve got to actually build the audience.”
