Women’s boxing is on the rise in Salford, with Eccles Boxing School hoping to inspire the next generation of female fighters.
The boxing club based on Legh Street, Salford, started a women’s class this summer after Grace Bowker decided she wanted to “create an environment that was open to women.”
Grace has been training at Eccles Boxing School for five years and runs the classes every Sunday morning between 9-10am. The classes welcome anyone regardless of age and experience, and are £5, pay as you go.
The classes are “fitness orientated and open to anyone who wants to give boxing a go.”
Grace commented on the importance of getting involved as “most girls who come to my classes start coming to the mixed sessions, so I just wanted to bridge that gap and get people involved”.
Although there is a stigma around boxing, Eccles Boxing School are keen to prove this stigma can be broken and everyone can get involved.
Fortunately, Grace has seen an increase in female boxers in her time at the School, stating: “We now have a group of boxers, there wasn’t any when I started.”
Furthermore, Grace added that “most of the female boxers in the gym started off with just doing the fitness classes in the gym, and now they’ve gone on to take part in fights, it can start off with just wanting to maintain fitness, but then you do genuinely fall in love with boxing”
The classes are proving a hit with participants, with “one of the girls saying ‘I love coming to your classes but thank you for just being welcoming’.”
If you’re wanting to up your fitness or get in to boxing, head down to Eccles Boxing School, where Grace and the group are beating the stigma with a knockout blow.
