The Spearhead Foundation have launched a project to ensure Salford children will not go without presents this Christmas.
The scheme, named the “Manchester Christmas Miracle”, is aimed at helping children and families who aren’t as fortunate and may miss out on the happiest time of the year.
The foundation will receive donations from the general public and will then deliver Christmas sacks – containing a selection box and two presents – during Christmas week via local firefighters and police officers.
This new project has seen a number of donations already and two Salford companies are on board. 30 families have also registered interest since the programme’s launch yesterday.
Foundation organiser Craig Monaghan said: “We have no set targets for the amount of present. We just want to help as many as possible – we want loads.
“We’ve already had £50 donated this morning which will be used to purchase small toys and two companies are also helping out.”
The Spearhead Foundation was set up in 2018 after British soldier Monaghan was injured in Afghanistan in 2009, leading to his eventual discharge. He decided to dedicate a sum of his compensation into helping other veterans and since 2018 they have helped over 4000 veterans in the North West.
While the charity is aimed at helping ex-servicemen, they also give presents and chocolate to children in hospitals on Christmas and Easter.
Craig kickstarted the current Christmas campaign having grown up missing out on presents himself and he does not want the kids of today to repeat that experience.
He added: “I only experienced a ‘movie’ Christmas about four or five years ago and this fuelled the idea of helping kids out during the holidays.”
