A man from Monton who lost £60 has been overwhelmed by the unexpected outpouring of kindness from the community who raised £335 for him.
Len Battersby, 82, of Monton, had just withdrawn the cash but it slipped from his pocket as he walked away from the Natwest on Monton Road.
His daughter Donna put a message on Facebook asking if anyone had found it and was astonished when 39 people sent donations to help him out.
Donna added: “I only Facebook posted in the group as I have previously seen a lot of honest people on there, so it was in the hope that someone may have found his lost money and handed it in somewhere.”
“From then its turned into a whirlwind beyond my control. Trevor is fantastic and I did thank him for the donations we have received.
“My parents are pretty private people and didn’t want all this fuss but my dad is extremely grateful for everything the people Monton have done for him.”
Donna also expressed: “He (Len) wanted me to thank the people who took the time to comment and donate saying that they are kind, generous people that make the world a better place to be.”
The initial goal was to raise the exact amount Len had lost, but the response from the community far exceeded expectations.
In a matter of days, the fundraising effort of 39 people accumulated a staggering £335, a sum that surpassed the original target and left not only Len and his family lost for words but also the co-ordinator of the fundraising effort, Trevor Cunningham.
Trevor added: “I never expected such an incredible response from the community. Monton has proven once again that it’s not just a place to live but a family that cares for each other in times of need.
“The generosity has not only restored my faith but also reminded me of the strength we have when we come together.”
In the face of a setback, Monton residents demonstrated that they are not just neighbours but a closely-knit family ready to support each other through thick and thin.
