Two popular musicals were brought to life by Year 10 and 11 students of Irlam and Cadishead Academy who performed a showcase of scenes from Matilda and Blood Brothers.
Year 11 performed the hit musical Matilda and Year 10 showcased a re-enactment of Blood Brothers.
With fantastic comedic timing, the class brought to life the musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s story about a girl who consumes books like water and can move objects with her mind.
Despite only showing a few select scenes from the musical, their capability to clearly carry the scenes made it easy to follow along.
One parent in the audience, Rebecca Hilton, said the performance had some “very funny moments” giving testament to their ability to use comedic timing.
Mrs Hibbet, a teacher at the Academy, said: “It was fantastic, the pupils have obviously practiced really, really hard. I was really impressed that some of them took on multiple characters, I thought that was really excellent.
“The way that they did some of the comedy was really hilarious, they did the sets really well, there was some musicality in there as well and it was really clear to follow the story.”
Year 10’s adaption of Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers truly encompassed the meaning of the show.
Set in Liverpool, the story follows the life of two brothers Mickey and Eddie, who were separated at birth and gravitate back to each other as they grow up, despite leading very different lives.
The students playing Mickey and Eddie were able to portray their characters from seven-year-old (nearly eight) children to adulthood.
Another parent Vanessa Thompson said the performance was “full of passion” and “personality.”
She said: “Children that are playing more than one character, they’ve got a lot of different things going on and they absolutely nailed it all of them tonight.”
Having watched Blood Brothers on stage in London, she went on to say that it’s a very difficult play to nail, with both funny and upsetting scenes and that these students “absolutely shone.”
“They really, really got the story across and it was captivating,” Vanessa added.
Miss Lloyd, drama teacher, said: “I’m very proud of the Year 10 and 11 students who performed.
“The dedication, professionalism and enthusiasm shown was fantastic.
“Some of the students performed for the first time on stage and were excellent.”
Mr Leader, Head Teacher of Irlam and Cadishead Academy, said: “I would like to congratulate our Year 11s and Year 10s students on their exceptional performance of the renowned musicals, Matilda and Blood Brothers.
“Under the guidance of our dedicated drama department, the students showcased their talent and hard work, delivering a truly outstanding show. The students worked tirelessly to perfect their roles and present their interpretation of this powerful and emotional production.
“The commitment and enthusiasm displayed by our students is commendable, and I am incredibly proud of their achievements.”
The acting ability these pupils displayed during this showcase really showed off their talent, these kids may be the ones to watch in the future.
