Swinton Lions over the last week have announced two new signings, both of whom will be featuring in the first team.

Both signings have generated lots of interest from fans as they cover depth and experience issues which the Lions have been faced with previously.

The first new signing is Welsh international Rhys Williams. The Welshman has previously been playing for Salford Red Devils over the last four years and has featured 58 times for them and scored 18 tries. He plays outside back and at 33 years old is entering the twilight of his rugby career.

Williams is a Wales Rugby League’s most capped player having pulled on the famous red jersey 33 times, with an impressive return of 22 tries.

Lions fans will hope that such a player will bring good fortunes as they face York RLFC and Barrow Raiders in their next two games.

Head coach Alan Kilshaw said in a public statement that Williams brings “leadership qualities and experience in world cups and Super League grand finals… but also featured in the championship for London Broncos so knows the competition well.”

With such a good try scoring record many fans have taken to X (formally twitter) to congratulate the side on the signing, and to wish the Welshman luck in this new endeavour.

Welsh International Rhys Williams a major coup for Lions!

With such an experienced player coming into the ranks Swinton Lions also have injected some younger talent with the signing of 24-year-old Joe Purcell. The versatile Purcell can cover a number of positions along the halves as well as at full back. His 2022 breakout season came playing for the newly founded Cornwall RLFC, having spent some time in Wigan’s u19s team.

Alan Kilshaw said: “Joe had a really good breakout season for Cornwall in 2022 which caught my attention. He can play full-back or half-back and has lots of development in front of him.” These two signings are polar opposites in terms of age and position.

Fans of the Lions will be hopeful that both new signings will make a strong impact as they hope to improve on their 10th place position.
