Salford City return to action this Saturday looking to inflict Mansfield’s first league defeat of the season.

Neil Wood’s side appear to have shaken off their early season woes, the Ammies are unbeaten in their last five games across all competitions and will be hoping to record a statement win against the high-flying Nottinghamshire outfit.

Whilst Mansfield’s league form has been inspired this season, the Stags’ poor performances in the cup competitions will be a minor cause for concern for Nigel Clough.

Salford’s battle with Clough’s side for the playoff places last campaign came down to the finest of margins, a single goal.

The Ammies secured a playoff spot on goal difference at Mansfield’s expense having scored one more goal and conceded the same amount as this weekend’s visitors throughout the course of last season.

With the last three matchups between the sides resulting in 13 goals, this weekend’s game has all the hallmarks of a thriller.

Full-back Liam Shepherd is relishing this weekend’s ‘”tough test” enjoying a self-confessed “unexpected” run back in the starting line-up having been side-lined with injuries throughout the majority of last year’s campaign.

Plagued with injuries throughout the opening part of the season Neil Wood will be hoping for better fortunes in what could prove to be a crucial part of the season.

Although this month is set to be a challenge for Salford who face playoff contenders Gillingham and automatic promotion hopefuls Stockport after Mansfield in November.

It’s also an opportunity for the Ammies to quickly make up ground lost on their promotion rivals after the season’s stuttering start.
