MediaCity will feature a trail of “spectacular” illuminations that residents can visit for free this December.
The illumination event, named Lightwaves Salford, features 15 artworks, three of which include an illuminated whale shark, a beaming garden of fire and a collection of giant glowing flowers.
The “incredibly life-like” underwater shark is created by Berlin-based artist Loomaland and spans an impressive six metres long.
The illuminating shark is the first of its kind and will debut in the Salford Quays on December 7.
The festival will also feature illuminations from Walk the Plank. They will mark their return to Lightwaves Salford with a Fire Garden which includes three giant glowing sculptures – one over 9 metres in size.
Other illuminations will use more immersive features. For example, The Nectary will use light and sound “to envelop you in a multi-sensory experience” with six giant hanging blooms, created by artist Alison Smith with Dr Chris Hassal.
This year’s light display celebrates the festival’s 10th anniversary and is expected to be their “best yet.”
Kate Doyle, Head of Programme for Quays Culture added: “The team at Quays Culture are truly excited by the programme of artworks curated for the 10th edition of Lightwaves Salford. Year on year the event delights audiences of all ages and we’re certain that 2023 will be no exception.
“As humans we have a primal response to light, especially in the dark winter months. It brings warmth, wellbeing and intensifies positive emotions. All are welcome to Lightwaves Salford and to experience the joy of light art.”
Lightwaves Salford runs over four evenings from Thursday December 7 to Sunday December 10 2023, 4pm-10pm.
The illuminations are a part of Light up the North, “a network of northern light festivals which have come together to share their collective expertise.”
No bookings are required to attend the event.
