The NHS is currently contacting patients in Salford aged 55-74 for a free lung health checks amid increased concerns.

The checks are specifically offered to residents living in the South East area of Salford with a history of smoking.

In September 2023 a report was submitted to Salford’s Health and Wellbeing Board to cover the smoking rates in Salford.

The report also assured that smoking remains the biggest cause of preventable disease and deaths in Salford and across the UK.

The board added: “About half of all life-long smokers will die early, losing on average about 10 years of life.”

Despite this, smoking rates in Salford have fallen from 27 per cent of the adult population in 2011 to below 20 per cent in 2022.

“But this still equates to 40,000 smokers in Salford, which is the highest rate in Greater Manchester”, the report argued.

Salford’s Health and Wellbeing Board state that helping residents stop smoking is a high priority for the board.

The board added: “We will ensure that smokers in Salford have access to behavioral support and quit aids to help them to quit tobacco smoking completely.”
