We are nine games in to the 2023-24 North West Women’s Regional League so it’s a good time to review Salford City’s Lionesses season so far.
After finishing second last season, Salford City Lionesses looked to build a solid foundation for this campaign.
The Lionesses lost star player Feiruz Abdullahi in the off season, as she moved to Huddersfield Town Women.
It hasn’t been the best start to the campaign for the Lionesses, sat in ninth place on seven points.
They started off the season in a less than ideal way, with a loss at Darwen FC. They countered this by battering Bury FC with a 5-0 win away from home.

A series of narrow losses then came, starting with Cheadle Town claiming a 2-1 win at Partington Sports Village.
Two 3-1 losses came against Crewe and West Didsbury and Chorlton on the road.
They did not have any joy in the Manchester FA Women’s County Cup either – conceding seven goals against Mancunian Unity Women FC.
A last minute winner cruelly eliminated Salford in the Women’s FA Cup, in an exciting match against Bolton at the Peninsula Stadium.
Salford have looked somewhat shaky at the back, conceding the second most goals in the league this season.
But their attacking output offers a different story. The 20 goals scored this campaign puts them top of the charts, guaranteeing an exciting game for all spectators.
An eventful 4-4 draw at top of the league Tranmere Rovers and a 5-1 victory over Fleetwood Town Wrens has been signs of the Lionesses finally turning a corner.
Niamh Grimshaw was a particular bright spot with their win over the Wrens, her Player of the Match performance highlighting Salford’s defensive fragility could become a thing of the past.

Their last game was a disappointing 5-0 defeat to Blackburn Community, with upcoming clashes at home to Curzon Ashton before a second game against Fleetwood on the horizon.
A tight table means that two wins can put Billy Coleman’s side right within the mix to match their last season’s successes.
With their form picking up recently, the Lionesses can build a strong platform to get their season roaring once more.
