Salford football fans are set to miss out after it was revealed that Old Trafford will not be hosting any matches in the 2028 Euros Championship.
The UK and Republic of Ireland were confirmed today as contest hosts after the only other bidder, Turkey, pulled out to focus on a bid with Italy for 2032.
Old Trafford was not listed as one of the stadiums to host games for the tournament due to potential renovations.
Kieran Birchall, a Manchester United fan from Salford, said: “I will try to get to at least one game but as they’re not in Old Trafford, the only place I can think of is the Etihad and I don’t plan on going to the Etihad anytime soon.
“The fact that it is not at Old Trafford does worry me a bit because we are probably one of the biggest and oldest stadiums in England.”
Fan Wayne Fernandes expressed his frustrations with Old Trafford being excluded, saying: “If Old Trafford was included, I would be (going).
“Considering Manchester is the second biggest economy in the UK, why isn’t Old Trafford included?
“It’s one of the biggest stadiums in Europe. It’s one of the main stadiums (in the UK), It’s got a big capacity so it should be included.”
The UK and Ireland 2028 host stadiums are:
Aviva Stadium (Dublin)
Casement Park (Belfast)
Wembley Stadium (London)
Principality Stadium (Cardiff)
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (London)
Etihad Stadium (Manchester)
Everton Stadium (Liverpool)
St James Park (Newcastle)
Villa Park (Birmingham)
