Albert Park’s artificial pitch is set to reopen next week on October 9 after a three month closure.
The park which is situated in Broughton, Salford has three quarters of a million pounds invested into it as part of a rejuvenation scheme.
The investment has been predominantly focused on re-surfacing the Astroturf pitch, which has been improved from a 3g to a 4g standard.
Local charity ‘Albert’s of Salford’, headed the investment. Ever since leasing the park from Salford City Council 20 years ago, the charity has overseen massive changes in the area.
Founder and current treasurer of Albert’s of Salford, Dave Morgan, said: “The whole process started before lockdown. We began talking to the Football Foundation about getting their support for a redevelopment.
“The football foundation was very keen to get us a new pitch because we’re fairly unique. We’re one of the few community led facilities left in Greater Manchester.”
The football foundation said they would put £600,000 into the makeover, as long as Albert’s of Salford were able to raise an additional £150,000 for the project.
Through various initiatives, grants and foundations, Albert’s of Salford was able to raise the £150,000 needed for the redevelopment.
Mr Morgan continued: “After everything was signed in the spring the contractors were able to get on site in the first week of July, with a view of finishing at the end of September. The handover will now take place on the ninth of October.
“That’s for the pitch and the fence work, not for the pavilion. We have had some setbacks on with the pavilion, which will now probably be completed in the next few months or so.”
