A Swinton-based Scout troop, which hosted a litter picking session to tackle dumped waste, says it wants to add more sections.
With the help of parents and Salford Litter Heroes and in aid of St Anne’s Eco Day, 1st Clifton Scouts cleared ground from St Anne’s Community Centre to Wroe Street. The troop consists of both boys and girls, ranging from six to 14 years of age, but there are plans to get younger children involved.
Scout leader Stuart Kernighan explained: “We’d love to open a squirrel section so we are actively looking for parents to help with that, this would be aimed at four- to six-year-olds.”
The Troop hosts approximately 45 children currently, but with a lot of the children almost reaching the age limit to move on to the next stage of scouting that is not connected with 1st Clifton.
Stuart said: “We still have space to welcome new members, we have the room to easily double that number.”
The Scout Group was first formed in 1964 and will be celebrating their 60th birthday on the 15th April next year.
They have recently acquired new leaders in the past year, in both their cubs and beavers group but “are always happy to have an extra pair of hands.”
Stuart commented: “We only have one guy and he can can only do once a month so we are in need of more participants, but it all helps.”
Stuart is also proud to announce that the Troop have “almost 10 Scouts about to achieve Chief Scout Gold Award, which is the highest they can achieve for scouting their age.”
Scout leader of 1st Clifton, Stuart Kernighan, said:
Both before and at the event, the Troops were also busy making seed bombs and pine cone bird feeders. Most attendees were sent with pre-made ones to “hopefully brighten up the area and encourage the birds to visit.”
