Swinton Lions have secured their Betfred Championship survival with a final day victory over Halifax Panthers.
The Lions knew that they only had to claim one point to stay in the league following Whitehaven’s loss to Toulouse yesterday.
Barring that, they had to maintain a 5-point gap to Halifax, and hope that Keighley Cougars lost their game.
Following a delayed kick off at The Shay due to traffic, the game kicked off with Halifax taking an early 4-0 lead.
Swinton worked their way back into the game however, with Mitch Cox scoring his first two tries of the season in quick succession and 12-4 up.
Nick Gregson scored before the half, and put Swinton comfortably on the path to safety as the teams headed out for the second 40.
Lachlan Walmsley put the Panthers back within 10, but a quick Swinton response sealed the tie for the visitors when Rhodri Lloyd crossed the line and 22-8 up.
A second try from Walmsley wasn’t enough for Halifax to mount a comeback, and the final whistle saw the Lions secure their status in the Championship for a second season.
Swinton Lions finished 10th in the table, ahead of Whitehaven and relegated sides Keighley and Newcastle.
