Swimming courses in The Quays has been cancelled for the week due to the emergence of Algae.
Salford Watersports Centre announced that swimming would be cancelled for the week, last night (Monday 11 September) via a Facebook post.
The Centre explained that its decision to temporarily suspend classes was to “err on the side of caution”, after a “noticeable presence” of Blue Green Algae (BGA) had been seen in surrounding basins, of which share the same water.
BGA is a species of Algae which can be harmful if ingested or skin contact is made. Contact with affected water can cause skin irritation, mild respiratory issues and hayfever-like symptom.
Swimmers were alerted to ‘Vigilance’ levels of Algae back in June after preliminary tests, however the recent surge of hot weather has lead to “noticeable” amounts of the species across other basins.
The post explained that the infestation “could potentially get worse”, but today’s (Tuesday 12 September) cooler weather has led to “a difference”. Classes are thought to resume by the end of the week.
Swimmers were assured that the decision was to ensure participants’ safety. It read: “We hope that this is just a brief pause and we’ll be back later in the week. Your safety is our priority.
