A series of exclusive behind the scene tours offering a sneak preview of Salford Cathedral’s multi-million pound restoration project are now available.

The Hard Hat Tours will allow visitors to climb the iconic 61-metre-high spire and come face-to-face with decorative gargoyles and features of the Cathedral, once a month.

Visitors will also be able to look behind the Cathedral’s exterior scaffolding, whilst hearing about the restoration process from specialist guides from contractor, Simpsons.

Beginning at the end of August, the monthly tours have proved incredibly successful thus far, with visitors educated on the restoration of the stunning East Window’s stained glass, which is currently in York’s Barley Studio receiving environmental and structural work.

One visitor said: “For me, the highlight was seeing the detail of the stonework up close and learning all about how they go about restoring that today. I just thought it was a wonderful opportunity and it’s given me a far better understanding of the extent of the project being undertaken in terms of the restoration work.”

Canon Michael Jones, Dean of Salford Cathedral, was delighted to welcome visitors to see the work first hand and to be part this historic process.

“Our team has been so excited to share this journey with our parishioners and visitors to the cathedral. It’s so rare that any of us has the opportunity to go behind the scenes of a such a major project and to actually see history in the making.

“Our cathedral is so close to the hearts of our parishioners, as well as people across the Diocese of Salford and wider community. It’s part of their own family histories as their parish home and their cathedral; it’s a place of weddings, baptisms, funerals, and other key life events, and will be for generations to come. To give people the opportunity to be part of this key stage of our combined story is a real privilege for us and our parish community.”

The monthly tours are due to continue into the new year, with each one highlighting a different aspect of our cathedral’s restoration journey. Upcoming dates include Friday 29 September 2023, Friday 27 October 2023, Friday 24 November 2023, Friday 26 January 2024, and Friday 23 February 2024.
