The Salford-based BBC Philharmonic is shortlisted in the Orchestra of the Year award, against some of the world’s biggest performers.
The symphony orchestra’s rendition of Shostakovich Symphonies Nos 12 & 15 John Storgårds (Chandos, 4/23) scored their shortlist for the Gramophone Classical Music’s Orchestra of the Year 2023, an internationally recognised classical music ceremony.
With competitors including the internationally renowned Berliner Philharmoniker (Germany) and Chicago Symphony Orchestra (USA), the award is the only one to be voted for by the public of the entire ceremony, which is hosted by Gramophone classical music magazine.
Last year, Budapest Festival Orchestra bagged top spot, scooping more than 38 per cent of votes (9120).
Other categories for the Gramophone Awards including Recording of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, and Artist of the Year.
The BBC Philharmonic have been based in MediaCity since 2007, and have established the Salford Family Orchestra to offer young people in the area the opportunity to perform at the likes of the BBC Proms and the BBC Philharmonic’s Family Concert at The Bridgewater Hall.
Players from the BBC Philharmonic have also performed in the Salford community, in places such as St Phillip’s Church, Islington Mill, nursing homes, canteens and factories.
The awards ceremony is sponsored by Apple Music, with each of the shortlisted recordings available to listen to on the platform.
To vote for the BBC Philharmonic orchestra, visit the award’s website. Deadlines for the award close Thursday 7 September.
