Salford has taken to social media to thank England’s Lionesses for their dedication and hard work, after last night’s World Cup final ended in a 1-0 heartbreak against Spain.
The outpouring comes after the Lionesses, who were looking to become England’s first World Cup win since the men’s team in 1966, suffered heartbreak yesterday (Sunday 20 August) after Spainish captain Olga Carmona dealt the winner past England goalkeeper, Lucy Brown, in the 14th minute.
As today see’s the England team fly home from Sydney, the people of Salford have taken to social media to thank the the team for their tremendous efforts throughout the tournament.
Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett tweeted: “Congratulations to #Spain & their #WorldCup2023win. What a great run from @Lionesses, they should be so proud of what they’ve achieved, not only in the 2023 World Cup, but in last year’s Euros & for Women’s Football & Sports in England & beyond. They’ve made history!”

Salford City Council shared their “commiserations” for the loss via a Facebook post, after Salford Civic Centre was illuminated red last Friday, in preparation for the final. It read: “What an amazing journey for the #Lionesses, commiserations on today’s result, but so much for the players and the nation to be hugely proud of. You’ve given us all so much joy over the last few weeks and inspired us all.”
Labour MP for Salford and Eccles, Rebecca Long-Bailey, shared a photograph of the team on Facebook, with the caption “We are all so proud of you Lionesses x”
Irlam Vale AFC also took time to thank the team for their “passion”. A Facebook post from their team read: “Lionesses you have made us proud today, your passion, your proud and showing us that anything can be done. If you have a dream follow it. You have all inspired a new generation of girls to play football. Keep up the great football, your country and Irlam Vale AFC are behind you.”
