Residents of Salford are largely happy after the government confirmed that single-use plastics would be banned from Sunday October 1.
The ban includes products such as plastic plates and cutlery, polystyrene cups and containers, as well as balloon sticks. The ban has been enforced in an effort to make the planet more sustainable and protect the environment for future generations.
One Salford shop owner said: “I do agree with it (the ban). It’s similar to the disposable e-cigarette ban, which I also agree with. There’s just nowhere for them to go and it’s silly and makes for so much more litter.”
Another resident was pleased with the ban due to global warming, but raised some concerns about how drastic the impact of the ban could be on some citizens. They said: “I think it’s good. Obviously the impact of climate change is rising and that plays a huge factor in it. But I think it makes it hard because it is a good material for local businesses and it’ll make it more difficult for people.”
Small businesses such as chippies and convenience stores could be heavily impacted by the ban, but the government are confident that it needs to be enforced. Environment Secretary Therese Coffey stated: “We have listened to the public and these new single-use plastic bans will continue our vital work to protect the environment for future generations.”
