Salfordians have paid tribute to the late Tina Turner, who has died at aged 83.
The ‘Queen of Rock n Roll’s’ death was announced last night (Wednesday 24 May) via her official Instagram page. The caption read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner.
“With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow.”
Music fans across Salford have taken to social media to share their condolences at the loss of the star.
The beloved ‘Gay Icon’, known for her outspoken advocacy for the LGBT+ community, especially those living with HIV, was remembered by Salford Pride, who shared a Facebook post stating: “Simply the best….
“The Queen of rock and roll will live on and always be remembered as an LGBTQ+ icon. Tina was the first black artist & the first female artist to be featured on the cover of @rollingstone magazine which brought empowerment all over the world.
“A true trendsetter and rock legend. Tina Turner has left the building Rest In Rock & R.”
Similarly, domestic abuse charity, Salford Survivors Project, named Turner an ‘inspiration’ for her role in ‘breaking the silence’ on her abuse from her former husband, Ike Turner. The post read: “Doesn’t matter where you’re from, how much money or fame you have, how beautiful you are you can suffer abuse.
“Don’t let them keep ypu down. Speak out. Another angel gains her wings who told the world the shame and fight back after being abused. Rest in peace you legend Tina Turner. An inspirational lady.”
