Former Salford Red Devils second row forward, and British Lions Rugby Union forward Mike Coulman has died at aged 78.

A former policeman-turned-rugby-star, Columan death was announced on Saturday morning (22 April).

The England international made 463 appearances, scoring 405 points and won two Rugby League Championships during his time on the field.

Coulman originally played for Moseley Rugby union club, before tearing the ligaments around his ankle during the 1968 British Lions tour to South Africa.

After the injury, Coulman joined Salford Red Devils in 1968, where his testimonial match came 11 years later.

Following his retirement, Coulman coached Salford for the 1983–84 Rugby Football League season. He was replaced at the end of the season by Kevin Ashcroft following the club’s relegation at the end of the season.

Salford Red Devils paid tribute to the star, resharing a 2018 interview and offering condolences to Coulman’s family. In a Tweet, the club said:
“Everyone at the Club were saddened to hear about the passing of Salford Red Devils legend, Mike Coulman. All our thoughts are with his family at such a sad time.”
