Teachers at a Salford school have expressed their fury after cars have reportedly been jumping red lights at Peel Green roundabout, allegedly putting students and commuters at risk.

Eccles’ Salford City Academy took to Facebook to share their frustrations, stating that the danger at the pelican crossing at Peel Green roundabout has been an “ongoing issue” for children at the school.

In a link on the post, an ePetition claimed that the light jumping issue is a “life or death” situation, with cars speeding up after the Argosy drive speed camera in a bid to “reach peel green roundabout in record time”.

The petition was launched by Gary Jones, who wrote: “My wife has almost been run over in October due to traffic jumping red lights and the car crashed into a traffic light.

“Today 07.03.23 i have been out with my 9 month old grandson in his pram to take a walk around the cemetery and used the pelican crossing to get across the road only to have a car jump red lights whilst the green man was sounding to cross the road and i had to pull the pram back to the kerb side.

“We have put up with this life or death situation for too long now and are not prepared to put our children’s lives at risk anymore.”

Salford City Academy voiced Mr Jones’ concerns, stating: “Almost every day, when crossing the road at the Peel Green roundabout, pedestrians are having to step back when the lights go on red due to cars jumping red lights; this is an ongoing issue affecting children at Brookhouse school’s.

“MP’s have been written to requesting support for cameras to stop vehicles from jumping lights.”

A spokesperson for Salford City Council said: “We note the concerns raised in the petition.  The lights at Peel Green roundabout are controlled by Urban Traffic Control, part of Transport for Greater Manchester, and we are discussing options about how the signals operate.

“We will also discuss red light enforcement with Greater Manchester Police. Our data shows that most motorists are complying with the speed limit in this area but we will work with our partners to deal with the minority who break the law. We urge all motorists to respect speed limits and take care on the roads.”

A GMP spokesman said: “Speeding motorists and dangerous driving has been highlighted by the public in GMP’s Neighbourhood Survey as a priority for residents across Greater Manchester.

“GMP will not allow the safety of our roads to be threatened by dangerous drivers, and appropriate action against will always be taken when offences are committed.

“That is why regularly carry out speed checks are carried out across the GMP force area.”
