Salford RSPCA and stars have joined hundreds of celebrities and charities in paying tribute to entertainer Paul O’Grady, who died on Tuesday evening, aged 67.

The charity wished their condolences via an Instagram post this morning, just hours after O’Grady’s husband, Andre Portasio, announced the news of the star’s death.

Andre Portasio, confirmed in a statement that O’Grady died “unexpectedly but peacefully” on Tuesday evening. He said: “We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss,” Portasio said in a statement.

“He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion.

“I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years.”

An avid animal lover, the TV personality and former drag queen supported Battersea Dogs and Cats home, becoming an ambassador for the charity, alongside winning the RSPCA Animal Hero award for an “outstanding contribution to animal welfare”.

Salford RSPCA said: “The world is a little less bright today and we’re heartbroken to hear the news that the wonderful Paul O’Grady has passed away.

“He was a shining light for animals with an inspirational passion and drive to help them! Our thoughts are with Paul’s loved ones, his many animals and our friends @battersea 💔💔💔.”

The statement follows a flurry of online condolences for the star, with Salford Pride reminisced on O’Grady’s time as the drag queen, Lily Savage, with an image accompanied by the caption: “Very very sad news this morning 😢. A UK legend who will be missed seeing on our TV’s 🥺 Salford Pride send love to his family.”

Happy Monday’s star, Rowetta, expressed her love for O’Grady via Twitter. She wrote: “Sad news to wake up to. Paul was such a beautiful, warm, kind and funny man. Loved him as Lily Savage and I loved being on The Paul O’Grady Show. Always so supportive. Condolences to his partner and loved ones.”
