To mark the beginning of Ramadan, the Salford Town Hall building has been illuminated in a bright green glow.

Last night (Thursday 23 March), Salford Civic Centre, Swinton was lit up with a green glow just after sundown to commemorate the first full day of the Islamic holy month.

This is the first time the building, which houses Salford City Council, has lit up its exterior in celebration of Ramadan

A tweet from Salford City Council said: “Ramadan Mubarak! The sun has set on the first day of #Ramadan – the start of the most sacred month in the Islamic calendar.

“We would like to send everyone who is celebrating good wishes with your fast, may the month be a very happy and safe one.

Local councillors have praised the move, with Councillor Sharmina August, Lead Member for Inclusive Economy, Anti-Poverty and Equalities, tweeting: “Last night, for the first time ever, we lit up town hall to mark the beginning of Ramadan.

“So proud of how we celebrate everyone in our city. We will not let division and hate win.

“Ramadan Mubarak!”
