Rebecca Long-Bailey has slammed today’s budget announcement as “gimmicks and spin” after a supposed lack of support for struggling families in Salford.
The MP voiced her concerns over Chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s budget announcement this afternoon via Facebook.
Issues surrounding ongoing strike action, “inadequate” energy bill support, and suggestions for long-term support amidst the cost of living crisis were among Ms Long-Bailey’s criticisms of the report.
In a Facebook post, Ms Long-Bailey said: “Britain desperately needed a Budget to tackle the cost-of-living crisis but once again the Tories have delivered a Budget that makes struggling families pay for the crisis caused by the Tory ‘mini budget’ last autumn. All we got was gimmicks and spin.
“Nothing for Britain’s key workers, forced to strike over poverty pay.
“Nothing for hard pressed families during the cost-of-living crisis and inadequate energy bill support as wholesale costs fall and big oil and gas giants report record profits.
“The budget should have seen beyond the 3 month energy price cap freeze with a promise to bring energy prices down as wholesale costs fall.
We should have seen a major uplift in benefits for the poorest, funded pay deals for all public sector workers, and a plan to end in work poverty not ‘more vigorous benefits sanctions’ that will destroy the lives of many.
“And more robust windfall taxes on oil and gas companies plus the introduction of a ‘wealth tax’ on the assets and profits of the super-rich could have funded a massive injection into our battered public services.”
