Salford City were able to return to winning ways this weekend against Newport County with an impressive 3-1 win.
Despite going a goal down, Neil Wood’s men were able to show some character to come from behind to secure three important points.
Salford City came into the game following a frustrating 1-1 draw to Barrow midweek and sit five points from the automatic spots.
Salford came into the game looking to re find the goalscoring threat they had in the 5-2 victory against Mansfield. Despite the limited numbers in away support, Newport County and Graham Coughlan have had exceptional away success in recent weeks.
The Ammies started very quickly much to the surprise of the Exiles, with Ethan Galbraith’s effort being saved by keeper Joe Day.
The pressure continued to mount in the opening five minutes with Hendry’s chance being scrambled off the line, with Ibou Touray’s chance being pushed out for a corner by Day once again.
These moments of excitement seemed to slow with Salford settling deep into their half holding possession.
Luke Bolton looked like their brightest hope of a goal as he was forcing himself down the right-hand side. However, it seemed to make no difference as Newport’s Harry Charsley scored the opener in the 28th minute.
As Charsley was found inside the 18-yard box in too much space and allowed to pick out the bottom right corner.
Despite the dominance in possession, they’d be left with no choice but to find a way back into this game.
And with a rare first-half substitution, which saw McAleny change for the injured Nartey, it seemingly made the difference.
Louie Barry also moved onto the right-hand side changing the attacking style of Salford, noticeable in the 44th minute with McAleny’s first chance being denied by Day and the post.
And just as the stoppage time was announced, Callum Hendry thrashed the ball into the back of the net from 6 yards much to Neil Woods’s delight.
Salford being the better of the two sides in the opening half, much more expected in the second 45.
The Ammies responded immediately, with Hendry laying the ball off to substitute McAleny, carrying the ball and drilling it past the keeper for the lead.
But sadly the celebration of the striker was short-lived as a collision with Newport’s Matt Baker forced him off the field.
Neil Wood opted for Theo Vassell, who conceded an own goal last time out, to replace him in the 69th minute.
With seven additional minutes of added time, it was to be a nervous ending to the game.
Salford had the majority of the later chances, with Matt Smith being the main target.
And despite earlier chances, he was able to find the back of the net to make it 3-1 in the fourth minute of added time, with Omar Bogle unable to get it off the line.
The dominant win allowed Salford to leapfrog Stockport County, who drew 0-0, moving to 6th in the table in this thrilling promotion race.
