Here are five ways you can celebrate International Women’s Day on Friday March 8 in Salford.
Misfits Menagerie
The Empty Space Theatre are host to the Misfits Menagerie, a truly inclusive variety show.
Leighlou Harper, the producer of the show states, “The main aim of the show is to prioritise marginalised artists. The burlesque cabaret industry is dominated by able-bodied, white, cis women. As an artist who doesn’t fit into that category, I felt it was important to produce a show that focussed on artist who are plus-sized, neurodivergent, chronically ill, disabled, POC, and people from the LGBTQ+ community. I feel it’s really important to showcase more artists from those backgrounds.”
All the artists in this show fall into one or multiple of those categories and Leighlou explained that some audience members identify similarly. The Empty Space Theatre has ensured there are accessible accommodations for the audience: there will be someone there to greet anyone with an access issue to welcome them to the venue and enable them to navigate around the theatre.
Leighlou feels strongly about International Women’s Day stating: “It has always been important to me, as a feminist, particularly one that has intersectional values. Although women’s rights have come a long way, there’s still lots of opposition around the world. I do feel that there’s still a lot that can be done.”
If you would like to celebrate IWD and show your support for the inclusivity theme tickets are still available for the performance on Saturday 9th March at the Empty Space Theatre.
