Since the recent outbreak of the Avian Flu in Salford Quays, all water activities in the area have been suspended.

The Salford Watersports Centre have since been working with the council, DEFRA, UKHSA and various Quays partners.

After a risk assessment was recently conducted, with activities being measured from low, medium to high.

The most recent update suggested ‘in water’ activities such as swimming and windsurfing to be high risk.

With ‘on water’ activities like paddle boarding and kayaking being classed as medium risk, being a limited immersive experience.

Non-immersive activities such as walking and rowing are being classed as low risk, dependent on the vulnerability of the group.

Sam Jones, a receptionist at the Watersports centre said: “We have had to suspend all activities because of it.

“We need to be careful in our activities as we deliver these sessions to vulnerable adults and children.”

The latest update from Salford Watersports stated: “Our priority remains to ensure the safety of all our customers, groups/schools and staff members, as well as trying to reduce the spread of avian flu.”

According to the website they are currently taking important measures to make sure areas are cleaned for low risk activities to take place.

With the centre taking guidance from the city council, DEFRA and UKHSA, they have to work with in a two week rolling period.

And they are yet to be able to confirm when they will be able to return. Visitors have been urged to keep away from birds, keep dogs on a lead and not touch sick or dead birds.
