Former Premier League referee Chris Foy has disagreed with the decision last weekend to award Rochdale a contentoius penalty against Salford City.

The incident happened in the 81st minute when experienced ex-Premier League referee Bobby Madley blew up for a Rochdale penalty when Abraham Odah was tugged to the ground by Elliot Watt.

The decision, which allowed Rochdale to get back into the game after being 2-0 down, has divided football fans for its softness.

So much so that in the EFL’s ‘Behind the Whistle’ analysis Chris Foy, former Prmeier League referee, deemed the call incorrect.

He said: “There is contact between the attacker and the defender, but it doesn’t meet the threshold for a penalty to be awarded. Having the benefit of replays, we can see that the attacker is then pulling the defender to the ground by his shirt.

“Ultimately, I believe play on – rather than a penalty – would have been a better outcome.”

Fortunately for Salford City the decision proved to be inconsequential as the Ammies went on to win the fixture 2-1 after a nervy final 11 minutes with their backs against the wall.

Salford City have now won four home games on the bounce, a first since their promotion to the football league, vital form in their push for promotion.

This is looking more possible than ever as the Salford outfit remain firmly in the play-off places.
