Salford will be affected by a national round of cuts by supermarket giant Tesco, with up to 50 jobs predicted to be lost.
The supermarket has stores across Salford including Tesco Extras in Pendleton, Walkden and Irlam where deli counters are expected to bear the brunt of the job losses.
There are also Tesco Express outlets in the area include Patricroft, Salford Quays, Moorside, Monton, Irlam and Swinton.
Up to 2,100 people’s jobs are at risk across the country as Tesco reduces the operating hours of deli counters and overhauls management roles.
The chief commercial officer for Tesco UK and Republic of Ireland, Jason Tarry, said: “These are hard decisions to make, but they are necessary to ensure that we remain focused on delivering value for our customers wherever we can, as well as ensuring that our store offer reflects what our customers value the most.
“Our priority is to support those colleagues impacted and help them to find alternative roles within our business from the vacancies and newly created roles we have available.”
Eccles Councillor Nathaniel Tetteh commented on the matter, tweeting: “USDAW (Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers.) will need stand firm in this matter. Silly behaviour from a very unsympathetic employer, especially given the current circumstances.”
Tesco will also be closing its “Jacks” discount chain. which is going to cost a further 236 jobs across the country, but it is buying stationery brand Paper Chase, and bringing its products in store.
