A Salford-based artist will show her abstract artwork that takes inspiration from her “fears and anxieties” in a new exhibition at Media City.
Sophia Dobreva-Nolita, originally from Bulgaria, will exhibit ‘Bluebirds’, a collection of acrylic on canvas based artwork, drawing inspiration from her life and experiences.
The exhibition is presented by Manchester Fashion Movement, a community interest company who aim to educate people on the damaging effects of fast fashion and waste.
Describing the exhibition, Sophia said: “It’s quite an intimate one, even though some of the topics are quite philosophical and let’s say, universal, it’s mostly my own fears and anxieties.
“[It’s] like a personal essay because it’s always been easier for me to paint or draw instead of write, it’s my way of sharing my thoughts.”
‘Bluebirds’ has been in the works for around 11 months and takes inspiration from one of Sophia’s favourite poems, ‘Bluebird’ by Charles Bukowski, which she says has “always resonated” with her and feels it is very fitting for her work.
Talking about what she wants people to take from her work, Sophia said: “I want people to feel like they can be vulnerable, use their fears to their advantage and have the strength to share that with the world”.
She has begun work already on her second exhibition, experimenting with miniature clay work, and hopes to be finished by Winter/Spring.
‘Bluebirds’ launch night event on the 2nd of February will also feature a spoken word performance from Loll Perkin as well as a dance performance by Reece (ReeRee) Daniels.
