A Swinton dementia centre is hosting a weekly night of dancing to support and aid people living with the condition.
Aspire’s Community Hub at the Humphrey Booth Centre hosts the Dancing with Dementia event every Wednesday at 11.30am. The sessions are hosted by Lesley Fisher and are the centre’s most popular activity.
Aspire provides day support in its Poppy Dementia Day Support centre, located at Humphrey Booth resource centre in Swinton, specialising in mid-late term dementia.
Aspire also provides centres across Salford helping and supporting different needs. Waterside, in Pendlebury, offers day support for people with complex learning or physical disabilities and has achieved Autism Accreditation for its specialist skills and services.
The hub offers a range of day support opportunities, alongside community spaces and activities such as cafes, carers support groups, social groups, and much more.
Lesley Fisher, founder of Dancing with Dementia, said: “Dancing and singing is known to be the best support for people with dementia.
She said “We do this every week now and the average is around 80 people. We’re touching the lives of so many people, it is just so vital for them to sing and dance as it helps them so much.
“This for me is so important as well, ever since my sister passed away, this is now her legacy that I am keeping alive. I am helping these people with dementia, to keep her close to me.”
Leanne Taylor, communications and engagement manager for Aspire, continued: “We have activities at least once a day. The normal day here at the Humphrey Booth centre has morning, lunch and evening activities.
“Dancing with dementia is our busiest activity and probably not what you expect of older persons. There is always a bit of jiving, bopping and general hands in the air singing along.”
