A national charity helping to reduce homelessness by providing people with host accommodation and a stable job is now working in Salford.
Standing Tall provides a full-time job and hosted accommodation for people experiencing homelessness. They are a national charity operating in areas surrounding Manchester, London and Birmingham, and they are now starting efforts in Salford with aims to work with 20 people a year.
Homelessness has gone up 11% since July and is forecast to go up 60 per cent to 70 per cent in the next year, and with the cost of living crisis, the situation is only going to get worse.
Standing Tall relies heavily on the public to become an ‘Amici Host’ and let people into their homes, as it is found that the first six months are vital so it is important to have a good support system around.
Edward Radford who is the Manchester Talent Scout for the charity said: “We tailor make the match, we have a white glove approach to things, we want to make sure that the people that we’re matching together are compatible to live with each other.
“Our Amici hosts are people who have got a spare room and spare empathy in their heart to house somebody for six months whilst they get settled into their new job.
“Amici Hosts are guaranteed £3,000 spread over six months by helping out someone that is homeless, so it’s a win, win situation.”
The non-profit organisation has links with companies such as Bella Italia, PPL, Urban Bubble, National Rail and painting and plastering companies for people to begin working at.
And the scheme has a success rate of 80% in Birmingham, with 4/5 people keeping the same job and having their own place the following year.
Mr Radford said: “We’re trying to say despite all the negativity going on, we have a solution to the homelessness issue and we have a solution if people want to get extra income by becoming a host.”
