Salford MP Barbara Keeley has welcomed Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s pledge to abolish the House of Lords and give more power to the regions if he wins the next general election and becomes Prime Minister.
Mr Starmer plans to replace the House of Lords, which was formed in 1801, with an Assembly of Nations and Regions.
In a statement today, the Labour leader confirmed that his party wants to abolish the institution saying: “I don’t think anyone can defend the House of Lords.”
Salford Labour MP Barbara Keeley tweeted; “@UKLabour will give new powers to towns, cities, regions and nations, setting the path for the biggest-ever transfer of control from Westminster back to the British people.”

Politics lecturer at the University of Salford Dr Ben Williams said: “If you remove the Lords from the political system, there would be some repercussions in terms of how the country is run.
“By reforming and making it elected you would be giving it a far more democratic basis and strength to its position.”
