Salford is leading a trial for more green bins at Peel Green Cemetery after reports that over 75% of compostable waste has been put in incorrect bins.
Councillors have backed the move for more green bins to the present at the cemetery after increasing numbers of recyclable waste is being put in general waste bins.
Barbara Bentham Lead Member for Environmental, Neighbourhoods and Community Safety for Salford City Council has backed the trial for more green bins to be present at the site.
She talked about her disappointment in visiting Peel Green cemetery as a frequent visitor. She said: “It just seemed such a shame, the flowers and plastic that could be utilised and could be sent away to and turned into compost locally, and the benefits are just amazing.”
She asked officers if they could encourage residents to separate the waste so it could be reused. She said: “I think it is hugely important, we are on a program about increase recycling across the board as we work towards carbon neutrality in 2038.”
When asked how the people of Salford would be affected by this, she stated: “Doesn’t everyone want to save the planet, more people want to do as much as they can rather than not, and I think the public are moving towards that.
“If all goes well, it will be rolled across all the cemeteries in Salford and wider, green space is anywhere there is likely to be green waste generated should have facilities for that to be recycled”.
The importance of protecting the globe has never been stronger and Bentham feels now more than ever action is necessary. She continued: “There needs to be a culture change, and I think people need to cut fossil fuels and greenhouse gases, we need to encourage plant-based diets and we need to maximise recycling rates.
“All of them are small steps to our final goal which is carbon neutrality”.
Bentham said it was not a council issue or a group issue, but instead an issue everyone can help support. Ms Bentham continued: “I am urging Salford residents when you are using the cemeteries, just some care and effort can make a huge difference and that will impact on the future of Salford, and obviously paying respects to families and people here.”
