A community grocery in Salford will be giving out free meals to those struggling with the cost of living crisis on Christmas Day.
The free meals will be given out at the Victory Outreach building on 19 Liverpool Street from 2pm.
The community grocery started after the lockdown was lifted in order to help those who could not afford basic groceries.
Theresa John, community grocery manager, said: “Last Christmas we realised that a lot of people are on their own, so we opened up our church for a Christmas meal and we had 25 people in attendance.
“It was such a good response that we’ve decided this year to sort of widen it out and just make room for more people.”
The free Christmas meals started last Christmas as the organisation noticed that a lot of people spent the day on their own.
Considering that the lockdown had affected people adversely, many people spend their Christmas alone, so the church, Victory Outreach, partnered with the community grocery and decided to bring people together.
“So, we are able to provide that space for people this time of year just for community, friendship and just to stay connected at this time”, Theresa explained.
The organisation would like to help more people than last year, so they have made room for 100 people to be fed this year.
Theresa said: “We want to be able to provide food and a warm space for anyone who is struggling.”
With the cost-of-living crisis in this season, giving a helping hand and giving out free meals this Christmas may go a long way in sustaining those in need.
The community grocery feeds families using help and donations from other supermarkets and this helps those in need to get quality food items for a fraction of the original price.
