A new community choir has started in Eccles, in hopes that it will bring the residents together.
Starting just last week, the ‘Salford Show Choir’ has amassed twenty founding members of different backgrounds. The choir’s main focus is centered on the community, and no one believes more strongly in this ideal than 30-year-old Ashley Mellor, the Director of the Music in Youth.
Mr Mellor said: “The main aim of every choir is exactly the same, bringing people together to sing is the most important thing. For us, it’s about the community. It’s about the people.”
Mellor hopes to give this choir the same opportunities as the other twenty-seven choirs he directs.
He followed: “[We will] do some really exciting stuff. We just want to make connections that open communication channels, that get people singing together but then get people speaking to each other. I think community and communication are the two biggest goals.”
Mellor stressed the fact that he hates the idea of finishing an event, finishing a performance, and just leaving. On the days that the schedule allows, he encourages the choir members to stick around to talk about the show and get to know the community they perform for.
Mr Mellor continued: “Everybody is more likely to come back to the next event because they’ve had a great time, its all about getting together and meeting new people.”
Despite being newly formed, Mellor already has some shows scheduled for the year.
He said: “Into the new year, we are going to be doing a showcase, in Monton. We are going to be getting together with Staffordshire Show Choir, and doing a summer project.”
The show choir itself has no upcoming events planned however, its sister choir, Salford’s Chamber Choir does have a show planned for December.
