In this series of reviews, Alfie Mulligan and Harry Warner will be delving into a world of cooked breakfasts and scrutinising Salford’s kaleidoscope of cafés and diners from Blackfriars to Boothstown, from Kersal to Cadishead all in the name of public service (and definitely not for their own personal enjoyment) to ultimately crown one of them Salford’s best full English.
Alfie started with Scrantastic.
Tucked away on Littleton Road, Kersal, you’ll find a lovely little eatery known as Scrantastic.
And with this series looking for the best breakfast spots in Salford, there is no doubt that this made a very good impression.
On entering, you are welcomed by the sound of a breakfast orchestra of hissing frying pans and chattering chefs.
And, despite the hard work of the staff, you are greeted with welcome arms on arrival.
With a solid combination of simple and traditional comfort food, met with dashes of colour, it was an easy choice on the menu.
A medium breakfast, for £4.50, that included three rashers of bacon, an egg, chopped tomatoes, a sausage, black pudding, and beans, perfectly met with a buttered white bun, was an instant eye-catcher.
Within minutes of making the way to your seats, it is placed in front of you quicker than most fast-food restaurants.
It quickly becomes apparent why this café receives such high praise, for the price you get more food than you’d think.
And with many cafés like this having the expectation of a greasy spoon, it is far from it.
With not a drip of grease, the bacon was cooked to perfection with a lovely smoky flavour, perfectly balanced with an over easy egg that when broken poured out like a golden liquid.
But don’t just take my word for it, with some google reviews saying: “The best about!!!!! I can’t explain how good the food is here. Never greasy, always fresh and tasty.”
Another added: “Really understanding food really taste it when you go to some other sandwich shops you get a grease sandwich, not at all here is the best one so far, I think in Salford.”
However, the option of toast was out of the question, after they’d run out (which goes to show the number of customers they serve). It was swapped out for a buttered white bun but as someone who isn’t a fan of butter, I wish I’d had the option to spread it myself.
Being in the heart of the community and with a share of quality comfort food, it very much feels like you are having breakfast in a home away from home.
And you are left with no reason not to believe that this is one of the best spots to pick up an early morning bap or come in for a filling traditional breakfast.
