Salford City Council have launched a ‘Winter appeal’ for basic essentials to support those struggling with the cost of living crisis over the winter period.
The ‘winter appeal’ aims to replenish local organisations with food, supplies and Christmas gifts amid the cost-of-living crisis.
A joint initiative from Salford City Council, the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and Salford Community and Voluntary Services (CVS), the winter appeal will send food and hygiene products to food banks. Meanwhile, clothes and presents will be sent to 500 over 65’s at pre-Christmas meals.
At the launch event, Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett said: “We don’t want anyone to feel under any pressure to donate but more and more people, even those who are working, are having to turn to food banks for the first time in their lives.”
Salford Foodbank, run by the Trussell Trust, gave over 8,000 emergency packages to people in crisis in 2021 and is expected to rise this year.
Alison Page, Salford CVS’ Chief Executive, said; “If anyone needs help with debts, bills or food we’re urging them not to be ashamed or afraid to ask. We know these are tough times.”
Food and clothes can be donated at Salford CVS and at gateway centers across the city. A list of items can be found on the Council website found here.
People can contribute further by volunteering and also can donate to the Salford4Good cost of living appeal, aiming to raise £50,000 by March 2023.
