The Salford Red Devils Foundation is hosting Rugby League training sessions for those with physical and learning disabilities at Eccles Sixth Form College every Tuesday.

Between 19:00 and 20:00, fully qualified Salford Red Devils coaches will offer full contact or touch rugby based training sessions, depending on the nature of the player’s condition.

Heather Robinson-Wynn is the Gameday Manager at the Salford Red Devils Foundation and explained why sessions like this are so important for disabled people. She said: “There’s been a number of studies and research that’s been done, which shows that disabled people tend to spend a very short period of the week outside of the home” she said.

Heather explained that the sessions are inclusive for all: “We’re looking for people of all ages, all genders, and just anyone who wants to spend some time becoming part of a team.

“It’s great for co-ordination, it’s great for people who want to make new friends, it’s just a great skill to learn. So why not give it a try? We will welcome you no matter who you are, or whatever your experience level is.”

All sessions are coached by fully qualified, and DBS checked professionals, who understand the fears and worries of parents and children who might feel nervous about the thought of participating. Heather ensured that the environment is hospitable and welcoming for everyone.

She followed: “To anyone who might be feeling apprehensive about giving it a go, I really recommend just coming down, and even if you don’t feel comfortable participating, then absolutely just come and watch, bring a chair, bring some friends, and just have a good time.

“We’re really happy to accept anyone. If you think that whatever disability you have might stop you from playing, there are ways round it.

“Even if you’d like to play on a particular side, that would make it easier for you to catch… we’ll adjust to make it as easy as possible for you.”
