Pensioners are being offered a free breakfast and a sandwich and soup for £2.50 at Langworthy Cornerstone as the cost-of-living crisis deepens.
Staff at the community venue feel it is more important than ever to provide “reasonable, affordable and good quality” food and get older people out of their homes and meeting people.
Representative, Beverly Fletcher said: “We provide a warm safe place for people who are struggling with the cost of living, they know they can come here- and they know it’s friendly.
“It really is a catalyst to get people back, get them out of the house, or their flats or wherever and have something reasonably substantial and meet other people.”
The Langworthy Cornerstone hopes the special offer at the Chimney Pots Café will increase social interaction within Salford’s older community.
Ms Fletcher said: “They didn’t need to get up in covid because they had nowhere to go. We’re trying to get people back into the centre and we’ve struggled because people have got used to their own isolation and it is becoming the norm, but it’s not the norm.”
The additional lunchtime sandwich/toastie and soup offer has been introduced to support seniors over 65 living in Langworthy, Seedley and Weaste.
Because of the cost of living crisis, many have to choose between putting the heating on or having a hot meal. Age UK has found that three quarters of over 65s admit they’re worried about the rise in the cost of living.
Over 80 individuals in Salford living around the M5/M6 area have benefited from the free breakfast.
Funds from Salford’s City Council Household Support Fund that supported the free breakfast have come to an end.
However, Langworthy Cornerstone are still continuing to provide a free breakfast, with a new addition of the soup and sandwich/toastie.
Clair Hardy, Chimney Pots Café Manager, said: “I think it’s actually gone amazing.
“It’s brought people out of their houses into the building, where they’ve met other friends during it as well. The feedback’s been absolutely amazing.”
